How do you create an XML sitemap from canonical URLs?

Create an XML sitemap from the URLs you approve, or review an existing sitemap for common problems. The tool identifies what it has validated and what still needs a live check. A valid sitemap helps describe the URLs you want discovered; it does not guarantee that they will be indexed.

A PRACTICAL WALKTHROUGH

When to use it and what to prepare

For site owners preparing a clean sitemap file from an already reviewed list of public canonical pages.

  • Confirm the website’s canonical origin and collect the intended page URLs.
  • Add lastmod dates only when you know the underlying content actually changed.

Work through these steps

  1. Paste one URL per line, optionally followed by a comma and its modification date, or supply existing XML.
  2. Review duplicates, excluded entries and origin mismatches.
  3. Download the reviewed XML, then separately verify live page responses before publishing or submitting it.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

Put the method into context

Illustrative example: a list contains /services/ twice and a URL on a staging subdomain. Remove the duplicate and keep staging out of the production sitemap instead of changing its origin just to make it pass.

How to interpret the result

The file describes a proposed set of URLs. Formatting checks do not establish that those pages return 200, are canonical or allow indexing. Confirm those facts against the deployed website.

Get a more useful result

  • Exclude login pages, drafts, redirects and intentional noindex pages from the input.
  • Use accurate modification dates instead of changing every date on each export.

Keep these limits in mind

  • This tool accepts up to 5,000 entries and 5 MB; larger sites need another workflow.
  • It does not crawl the URLs, publish the XML or submit it to Google.

How this tool works

Up to 5,000 entries and 5 MB, restricted to the declared origin. Real lastmod dates are optional. The protocol limit is larger; this tool uses a smaller working limit.

Questions about this tool

Can I use this tool now?

Yes. Provide your name, email and business or project name, with permission to contact you about the request. The tool opens when Web3Forms accepts the submission. Calculation inputs and results stay in this browser, without saved history.

Does generating a sitemap submit my pages to Google?

No. The tool prepares or checks XML. Publication, Search Console submission and Google’s indexing decisions are separate steps.

Must every sitemap entry have a lastmod date?

No. Leave it out when the real modification date is unknown. A current date that does not reflect a page change is not a useful substitute.
