RAG and AEO page sections: a practical guide
For this content package, a main explanatory section targets roughly 110 to 225 English words and keeps its heading, answer, conditions and sources together.
RAG and AEO page sections: a practical guide: what does the guide cover?
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) retrieves source material before a system composes an answer. The material may be split into chunks, but the splitting method depends on the implementation.
Treat length as an editorial target
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) retrieves source material before a system composes an answer. The material may be split into chunks, but the splitting method depends on the implementation. There is no universal rule that every search product retrieves exactly 150 to 300 tokens.
Google does not require special AI files or markup for its AI search features. [1]
5 to 225 words. This package uses 110 to 225 words as a practical writing range for main explanations. Count the heading with the text when preparing retrieval input.
Actual token counts depend on the tokenizer, language and punctuation. Measure with the target tokenizer before imposing a strict model limit.
Keep the source attached to the answer
A retrieval record should identify the page, language and section before it stores the text. Use a stable section ID and a canonical URL with an anchor. Include the heading and enough subject context that the answer remains understandable away from the full page. Preserve a supporting source beside any sourced fact.
Do not mix public explanations with editorial notes, account data or instructions copied from attachments. Store the content hash so an index can detect a changed record. FAQ answers and table rows can remain separate small records when they are complete statements.
This package exports their type and length classification instead of padding them with repeated sentences. When a page changes, refresh its visible text and retrieval records from the same source, then retire superseded chunks from the index.
